Have a used Z3, no book & my mechanic does not know,

There is an amber light that is always lit. It is located lower dead center in the instrument light cluster. It kind of looks like a gear but has an exclamation point inside.

Any idea what it means? Thank you!

Honestly, if your mechanic doesnt know what the light is for, find a new mechanic.
It is the Check Control light, aka, Check Engine Light. the exclamation point means its 'urgent".
Take your car to an autozone and have them pull the diagnostic codes. They will do it for free, while your mechanic will probably charge you $50, but i would be affraid that a mechanic who doesnt know what a check engine light is, would somehow screw up pulling the fault codes.

Hi,1st post-ever on this sight,bear withme!

I have a z3 2.8,fabulous car however ive just noticed the amber warning light has come on...... continuous!Got the manual out but ive just driven 50 miles and its running fine, acceralation, braking, idle speed etc..... should i keep an eye on it and use it as normal(see what happens},im loathe to pay £110 for a diagnostic check although its obviously come on for a reason!
In the book it says....engine output malfunction!
Any thoughts anyone....PHIL

The cars mileage 34k,genuine.
