Which would you buy and why:

1999 BMW 323i convertible w/ 98k miles - OR -
2000 Lexus RX300 w/ 89k miles

Both vehicles are nicely equipped.

Personally, I dont care for convertibles, so I would take the Lexus. I also think the Lexus will be a little more reliable.

Personally, I wouldnt buy any car with that many miles. You are just asking for trouble.
Both cars are reliable, however they are both very expensive to maintain. With cars that old you ARE going to have some problems and those problems are going to be very expensive.
